On the fog-grey sands of Selidor, Ged lies barely breathing — the door sealed, Cob defeated, but every thread of his wizardry spent and gone. Arren tends him through the quiet hours, finding water, keeping watch, until the oldest of all dragons descends from the sky: Kalessin, iron-coloured and rust-red-winged, speaking Ged's name three times like a benediction.
There is something unutterably tender in this ending — the great Archmage lifted on a dragon's back, his yew staff left half-buried in the sand, the long voyage home made on wings older than memory.
